Transition To Your New Space

By Cindy Aldridge

Downsizing is a stressful time for the best of us. You’ll be considering a new home (that makes you happy) while decluttering your old things and managing the logistics of moving. But if you’re a pet parent, moving is a whole different ball game. You’ll need to minimize the stress for your critter, too – plan their activities, comfort, and safety while honoring food times, belongings, and safe spaces.

In this article, El Rancho Exilio Animal Sanctuary walks you through the best tips to transition to your new space with your furry friend in tow.

Get Outdoors

According to a study by Animal Wellness Magazine, animals thrive being outside in nature. Since you’re planning to uproot everything your pet has known, it will be essential to provide a stabilizing base they can look for in the new environment. You can do this by prioritizing movement and play a month or so before the big move. Throwing a ball around in your yard or heading out for a long walk is a great way to keep your dog happy and healthy (cats may prefer snuggles and naps out in the sun). Keep up this outdoorsy spirit when you arrive at your new home to keep a seamless line of familiarity throughout the experience.

Selling the Old Home

You’ll need to begin by prepping your home for an easy sale. You can do this by making quick changes that will significantly up the home’s value – for example, curb appeal, professional cleaning, and getting some of the finishes updated. Maintaining beautiful landscaping and gardening will also be critical when listing your home, as it is a crucial element buyers look for. Be sure to look up ‘lawn care services near me’ to find lawn moving professionals that will take over the irrigation, fertilizing, landscaping, and pruning for you. This way, you can focus on the important stuff – but be prepared for the services to set you back between $30 to $80 and more for additional assistance.

Purchasing a New Home

Look for a new home within your budget by researching average prices in your preferred neighborhood. When looking for a mortgage, be sure to calculate your debt to income ratio – you can do this by dividing your monthly debt obligations by your monthly income. This will give you a good idea of how much you can expect to pay each month – and planning is critical when downsizing!

Provide Support During the Adjustment Process

American Kennel Club reports that pets can feel overwhelmed by environmental stimulation in the same way that humans can. To keep your pet comfortable throughout the process, you will want to introduce change gradually. If your new home isn’t too far, going on walks in the new neighborhood will be an excellent first step. Stick to the same feeding and walking schedule, and keep some of the same scents going in the new house to reduce feelings of homesickness.

Moving can have many moving parts – including packers, boxes, and trucks in the way. To keep your pet safe throughout this, ensure they are leashed, so they don’t accidentally get hurt. Having one room free of moving boxes (and movers) with their bed and toys will also retain a sense of safety and comfort for your pup.

If you’re overwhelmed at the thought of your upcoming move, we understand. Just remember – animals are creatures of habit. Ensure you’re prioritizing their routine and seeing the world from their eyes. A little bit of empathy will go a long way in making sure they adapt to their new environment quickly and seamlessly.
